BETA Perl script for Mac OS X or Windows users for Caller ID popups when using Linksys/Sipura devices

photo credit: bcostin PLEASE NOTE: This is a repeat of an article that ran yesterday.   This now works with a Mac or Win32 computer and has been updated to reflect that fact. If all of the following are true: You have a Macintosh computer with OS X installed, or a PC with any 32-bit version of Windows installed (basically Windows ‘98 through XP) You have Growl (on a Mac) or Snarl (on a PC) notifications installed You have a Linksys or Sipura VoIP adapter on your local subnet or home netwo.

So for now, this script will probably only be useable by those with sufficient knowledge to run a Perl script on their Mac. If I were a bit more knowledgeable, I’d build a preference pane to go in System Preferences, and then have the script read that for its configuration options. But I still have no idea how to make an app install missing Perl modules, particularly when OS X does not come with “make” installed until and unless the Developer Tools are installed.

Thoughts and Opinions concerning Microsoft OCS 2007

I recently posed a question to a wide range of colleagues, most of whom work work within the telephony industry. I asked…”What are your thoughts regarding the industry impact of Microsoft OCS 2007 and their overall offerings in the UC and VoIP space. ” Well, I received many opinions, and I have summarized them below. MS will push hard into this space and spend lots of marketing dollars.

Outside of that market segment, I don’t think they’ll have much success at all. They will, however, dump millions into advertising, campaigning, and education of the layperson into to the basics of VOIP, which we will all be able to leverage, no matter whether we use their product or not. Overall I think this is an excellent opportunity, as not everyone has their clout nor assets, but we can all make use of the “output” of their efforts, so to speak.

Giant ( Microsoft) awakened by Google, Bids for Yahoo

Well the giant finally woke up or rather was awakened by Google. I have said this many a times in my earlier articles, that Google is giving sleepless nights to Microsoft. So the acquisition bid comes as no surprise to me. Wow! this is one hell of a deal. Very tempting, will yahoo embrace it or will it brave the chest and take the bullet. To me, the merger makes more sense to both yahoo and Microsoft.

So it’s going to be a paradigm shift for Microsoft to move from PC world to the internet world. What is stopping Google from bidding? Well, if Google were to do so, a slew of anti-trust would emerge Here is some data of search and applications (courtesy Hit Wise). Looking at this data, it’s very clear, Microsoft can benefit from yahoo’s social graph more than the search arena.
