Senate OKs E911 requirements

I gotta run to my sons and coach basketball, but I will do this real fast. Ars Technica has written about the new requirements E911 bill passed by the Senate. Ars normally does a great job with his analysis, so I will not bother. My only comment is that the Congress seems to write policy, without concern for the effort of implementing the procedures.

Now that the FCC has the authority to issue new requirements, I hope (but doubt), which will collaborate with businesses and technologies for implementing this correctly. OK, so I am cynical about the government, he worked on it all my life. EDIT: BTW, just in case some are wondering if this applies to the security of VoIP, for my surroundings, the service E911 is a security requirement.

Get Asterisk Visual Voicemail Via Your iPhone

I ran across this interesting development today browse the Asterisk-list of the user. It seems that developers Asterisk Chris Carey has created a way to check your Asterisk PBX voice through its iPhone. Using Asterisk and iUI an iPhone user interface, Chris has been able to design a piece of software that sits on the server itself Asterisk that lets you check your messages, listen to messages, delete, move messages, and change configuration Voice - everything from its iP.

This is impressive… even though I am not a great fan of my iPhone. The software has not yet been released, but should be ready any time. I have an email to Chris for more details. Below are some snapshots of what Asterisk Visual Voicemail for iPhone resembles (courtesy of Chris). .

About VoIP: 911 Bill Passed by U.S. Senate

It seems that everyone, but this is a fact, for better or worse (VoIP better, because now businesses have a legal right to have access to 911 centres answer, what is worse, because it is likely to cost, and that It cost was passed on to customers, and I bet most of that money somehow end up in the pockets of incumbent telcos): The Senate recently approved a bill that would require VoIP providers to ensure access to 911 customers .

S428, the IP-Enabled Voice Communications and Public Safety Act, access interconnected VoIP is the same as traditional telephone companies to ensure that calls made over 911 lines VoIP reach an operator at all times. Here is the gist of it: I do not subscribe to Vonage, which I use for my Packet8 VoIP. In a Vonage assigned Packet8 my phone. One of its new clients. Helping Canadian Companies Sell Globally - Upcoming Teleforum

One of the biggest challenges facing Canadian companies is our small domestic market, especially for telecom. To succeed, you need to sell into other markets, which is something Canadians aren’t by nature very good at. That’s a topic unto itself, and if you want to understand this challenge better and hear first hand how some local companies are doing it, you’ll want to participate in an upcoming teleforum.

I’ve posted about MyThum before and they’re a great example of what Mike will be covering during the call. You can learn more about the session from a backgrounder Mike has prepared. Unfortunately, I’ll be out of town that day, so I’ll miss the call. This shouldn’t stop you, though, and if this topic is of interest, it will be time well spent. IT360 Conference Agenda Posted

Been meaning to post about this for a while. The IT360 Conference is coming here in Toronto from April 7-9, and the agenda was recently posted to their website. It’s still a work in progress, but will give you a good idea of the range to topics being covered. I’m Co-Chairing the Unified Communications track with colleague Henry Dortmans. Most of our program is set, but we still have some adds and changes coming.

Most of our program is set, but we still have some adds and changes coming. We’ve been at this for a while, and have a strong roster in place, and you can get a sense here for what we’ll be talking about. I’ll have more updates as we get closer to the date, but can tell you now it’s a strong program, and should be a great opportunity to get apprised on where Unified Communications is going in Canada.
