Low-hanging Fruit

In the process of doing some research on another project, I noticed an article on SNMP. The article mentions how one percent of system administrators are inadvertently leaving SNMP available to be read via the Internet. Although I have not seen an abundance of VoIP configurations that can be accessed from the Internet using SNMP and much less, I noticed default several public and private channels during internal evaluations and uses this seemingly little oversight to enumerate the objectives VoIP f .

As you know, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. "Implementing and maintaining security is a journey that never ends and the first step of many toward being sure to remove the low fruit hanging on the network. Brian Lutz.

Digg on the Block? Again?

As for the rumors go, this has been heard before, but that does not mean that one of those times, it did not really come to fruition. Tech Crunch Michael Arrington writes that Digg is on the block again, and that several compaías-Microsoft, Google, and two "media and news companies" - are close to making deals.

Automotive Robotics Sales Increase

Do not call it a return. Okay, well maybe a little return. According to the latest figures from the Robotic Industries Association, North American-based robotics firms saw orders for manufacturing enterprises in North America to rise 24% in 2007, reversing the decline in the previous year. The trade group is reporting a total of 15856 robots, with a value of $ 1.

The RIA estimates that some 178000 robots are now at work in US factories, which occupies the United States, second only behind Japan in the use of robots. Time to milk the cow(users),J and J trying hard

Jaxtr wondered what to do with 10 million user base that was built by giving away free beers? It claims to have gained 10 million users in less than a year. Wow! what an achievement. Nonetheless, it makes me wonder if it is so difficult to get users hooked up to your service that is basically free. Everybody loves free stuff. From what I understand, the VC’s money is all spent giving freebies to all those tire kickers looking for cheap/free calling minutes.

According to Om“ @ 10 CPM, you would need a million calls to make $10,000 “Here is what Timothy Johnson () has to say about jangl-“Jangl makes money two ways: one rev stream is subscription-based $ in dating/personals sites, and another is free, ad-supported voice and SMS services in social networks”From a user standpoint, it is still good news.

Do You Want Ads With That VoIP? Do You Think It’s Sexy?

Jangl is trying to prove that people will want ads with their phone calls with the launch of a new ad campaign to prove the point, reports Mashable. This comes on the heals of Jangl powering a dating site called Plenty of Fish, which TechCrunch wrote about in January. Candidly, for the causal sex (See Craigslistpersonal ads) crowd and the dating market Jangl is perfect, especially for those preferring the random hook up, It is a market full of people who “don’t want to know you more than tonight”.

But there’s more. For the teen and college market, saving money is important. If Jangl can prove that the advertising to them translates to sales and not just hook ups, and even more hang ups, then there’s a business model here and Jangl more than most is well positioned to make money on it. But if the kids just put up with the ads to get to the hook up, and don’t spend the money, then this is nothing more than one Super Size Trojan horse play.

In The VON Innovators Circle

Yesterday the news broke about 65 companies that the VON and PulverMedia team consider innovators with the launch of the VON Innovators Award. I’m happy to say that of the 65 companies I’m aligned with five of them, four of which I advise or which my agency, Comunicano handles their external communications. Congratulations to Agito Networks, iotum, SightSpeed, TalkPlus and the Thomas Howe Company.

What’s more, the group of people associated with each company are all cut from the kind of cloth that makes every discussion and opportunity very interesting. In 2007 we had six of the Pulver 100 Companies. With the cutting back to only 65 awards, and with five winning companies, it looks like my batting average went up. Thanks to the judges for recognizing whose best and for Carl and Doug for organizing an awards program where it didn’t cost anyone to be considered.

Small Office Systems Coming to Light

Last year we worked with Telephony2, a small angel backed company that had a killer telephony service suite for SOHO based on . Net. This year we’ve seen TokTumi and now Jazinga come to market. My question is not if there is a market, but how any of these companies plan to get to the market. I keep hearing the same things everyone has said for years, and am awaiting the day when something new is said.

Analysts Excited By “Google Health”

For those who read this blog regularly, you’ve no doubt noticed I’ve been focusing in a bit more on Google and what they’re doing in the realm of healthcare recently, with their work with the Cleveland Clinic and their entry into the healthcare space.   I came across some commentary from Datamonitor associate analyst Justin Davidson regarding Google’s prospects in the healthcare space and felt compelled to write about that here.

Check out the story, and let me know what you think about Google, Microsoft, et al entering the personal health records market by leaving a comment below. VoIP, Vonage and Skype - 3 of my Favorite Things - Ike Elliott Too

I’ve done plenty of blogging, writing and podcasting about these 3 topics - VoIP, Vonage and Skype - over the years, and sometimes I feel I’m the last one standing pointing to any signs of hope for Vonage. Well, I may have a kindred spirit in Ike Elliott, whom I’ve been getting to know better recently. He’s turned up in a few of my posts, and his blog, Telecosm - love the name - is really starting to find its voice.

All good stuff here, and I just want to shine some light on Ike and the good work he’s doing. Am sure he and I will find a way to tease these ideas out further another time - maybe here, maybe on his blog, maybe on a podcast. And if you want a bit more, come visit the IP Convergence TV portal, which I am the Editor of. Ike has just written a Guest Opinion article on this topic, and it will be posted in the next day or so.
